Titans Under 13 Boys host visiting Spanish Team

Last weekend saw Titans hold their first juvenile tournament of the new basketball season in the Jes. The U13 boys played host to a 4 team tournament, featuring, San Agustin from Santander (Spain), Sligo All Stars and Maree Basketball Club. The day was a veritable basketball feast, with parents and coaches animated and elated on the sidelines. Every point was skilfully and courageously fought for, until the last second. All games ended within 10 points of each other, with most winning teams relievedly finding themselves up by 1 or 2 points when the final buzzer sounded. unnamed (2)

San Agustin had not found their Galway basketball legs in their first game against Maree, but were standing tall by the time they met Sligo All Stars. The All-Stars fought a valiant battle against the Spaniards, but in the end, it was to be Spain’s game. The Allstars showed what a wealth of upcoming talent is on offer in Sligo, arriving with a young team and giving each and every opponent a mighty battle. A force to be reckoned with going forward, and a pleasure to welcome to our tournament. Thanks Glen.unnamed (4)

Titans had to fight for every result, with each and every game ending up being won in the last few minutes of the game, Having beaten both Santander and Sligo, it came down to the two Galway teams to decide the winner. Despite the excellent play by our boys, especially that of Dean Coughlan and Brian Gafney, Maree’s team came out on top by two points to record the final victory of the day. Credit to Ben Burke and Steven Cox for such a stellar performance.unnamed (1)

Who won and who lost were quickly forgotten as the boys from Maree, Santander and Titans all dug into pizza together after the final. It was wonderful to watch the players from the clubs all eating, chatting and joking together after the game. unnamed (5)

Wins and losses are soon forgotten, but new Snapchat friends endure! unnamed (8)

A huge thank you to all the parents who helped make this happen. To those who hosted the Spanish children and welcomed them into their homes for 4 days, a huge thank you! I hope your children gained as much from the experience as the Spanish did, they had a brilliant time. To the parents who baked, made sandwiches etc, your help was greatly appreciated. To those, especially Margaret Coughlan, Melanie Kelly and Carmel O’Donnell, who basically took up residence for the day behind th     unnamed (3)   e serving counter in the Jes, you have no idea how much your time and efforts mean to the club. Thank you.

We are very lucky in Titans to have a dedicated group of young people who never think twice about giving back to the club, whether that be in helping coach, or as in the Jes last Saturday, manning the table for the day. So Ben, Roisin, Darragh McNulty, Matthew and Aaron, thank you. To Joe Bree who decided to drop in and ended up on the table for a few hours, thank you, always a pleasure to see you!unnamed (6)

A huge thanks to coach Paul Langan and manager Rowena Kelly, who managed to pull the tournament together and ensure a good time was had by all. Thanks also to Rachel Gaffney who was invaluable on the bench.unnamed

Titians were privileged to welcome the Spanish, San Agustin, team into our club and our homes. The boys were a pleasure to host. Here is hoping that we continue to travel, compete and meet up with each other over the coming years. A great credit to head coach and chief organiser Jancho De La Llama.unnamed (7)
